Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, the Dallas Cowboys fanbase reacted to the breaking news that a former first-round pick, former Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander-Esch, was retiring from the NFL due to health concerns. The announcement came days after the Cowboys released the All-Pro linebacker last week amid rumors of a pending retirement.

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t think their star LB would return in 2024

Vander Esch has dealt with neck injuries since the 2019 season. In mid-November, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced that Vander Esch would be out for the remainder of the 2023 season and might never play another game in the NFL due to his most recent injury.

Vander Esch is retiring with 469 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions in his six-year NFL career.
