Following the departures of multiple members of the 2023 coaching staff, the Dallas Cowboys have officially finalized the 2024 coaches roster under head coach Mike McCarthy. The staff had a large amount of turnover due to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn‘s departure to become the Commanders head coach.
Secondary coach/passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. joined Quinn as the Commanders defensive coordinator and assistant defensive line coach Sharrif Floyd also left for the same role in D.C. Meanwhile defensive line coach Aden Durde took a promotion to become Seahawks defensive coordinator and offensive assistant Will Harriger joined the Panthers as a QB coach.
McCarthy hired Mike Zimmer to replace Quinn and allowed the new DC to bring on his own crew for the defensive staff. He added Paul Guenther, Jeff Zgonina, Greg Ellis and Cristian Garcia.
Though he was highly sought after by other teams this season, defensive backs coach Al Harris opted to remain in Dallas. He took on the title of assistant head coach for the 2024 season.
“Al has been such an impactful member of our coaching staff and team,” McCarthy said in an official statement. “I’m looking forward to his leadership in this expanded role. He’s a highly effective mentor and motivator, and our entire team will benefit from him taking this elevated step. Al’s dedication, teamwork, understanding of the game and experience in developing the unique dynamics necessary to support a championship locker room are all part of his special fit for this.”
The Cowboys also hired one new member of the offensive staff – former Boston College offensive coordinator Steve Shimko. Wide receivers coach Robert Prince also accepted a promotion to take on the added duties of pass game coordinator.
