Dallas Cowboys give wide receiver Michael Gallup permission to seek trade, per report
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys are giving veteran receiver Michael Gallup permission to talk to other teams about trading for him.

This is according to Calvin Watkins with the Dallas Morning News. Watkins shared that a trade might be problematic for Gallup since teams around the NFL expect Dallas to release him.

It is probably not a surprise that the Cowboys are pushing Gallup out of the door. He was due for a $4 million check if he still was on the roster, March 17. The payment would represent almost half of his salary for the year.

Michael Gallup would be 4th highest paid Cowboys offensive player if he stayed on roster

The DMN noted that Gallup, if he stayed in Dallas, would be the fourth highest paid offensive player on the team. However, Gallup’s production dropped last season. He played every game, yet he was only the fifth most targeted by Dak Prescott. He ended the season with 34 catches for 418 yards and two touchdowns.

“We don’t have a decision that we would like to talk about right now,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told owners about Gallup last week at the NFL Combine. “It’s one that we will be going over with him. Nothing we would say without him being involved. We need to sit down and go over stuff with him before we talk about what we’re going to do with him.”

It was difficult to ignore how involved Gallup was in the offense last season. He was targeted 55 times. In contrast, stats showed that the Cowboys threw to CeeDee Lamb 181 times. Tight end Jake Ferguson ranked second at 102. Then came receiver Brandin Cooks at 81. Running back Tony Pollard was fourth at 67.

The Cowboys selected Gallup in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. His best season was the next year, when he caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards.
