Dallas Cowboys’ Highest-Graded Free Agent Signing May Surprise
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys might not have the spending flexibility to be big spenders in free agency this offseason. Still, the franchise’s highest-graded free-agent addition from last offseason is a bit of a surprise.

Ahead of the 2023 campaign, the Cowboys brought back defensive playmakers Dante Fowler and Jonathan Hankins, backup quarterback Cooper Rush, and added running back Ronald Jones, offensive lineman Chuma Edoga, and cornerback C.J. Goodwin, among others.

However, at least according to Pro Football Focus, the Dallas Cowboys’ highest-graded free agent signing from 2023 was actually long-snapper Trent Sieg.

“The Cowboys made most of their moves via trade last offseason and managed to grab a crucial contributor on special teams,” Mason Cameron writes for PFF. “Sieg finished as the 11th-highest-graded long snapper in the league, making just five off-target snaps on 140 attempts.”

One of the more underappreciated and unheralded players on a roster, Sieg provided a strong level of consistency to the Cowboys’ long snapper position.

Sieg certainly came a long way since arriving in the NFL as an undrafted free agent signing of the Baltimore Ravens, back in 2018.

The Cowboys hope that Sieg and the special teams can rise up the ranks in 2024, especially after finishing the 2023 campaign ranked No. 12 in the NFL, according to Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings of the top special teams units across the league.

How much Cap Space do the Dallas Cowboys Have?

The Dallas Cowboys ultimately inked Sieg to a three-year deal worth $3.4 million last offseason, as a bargain free agent signing to fill a void on the roster.

Ahead of free agency getting underway on March 13, the Cowboys might be forced to shop in the mid-tier of free agents, once again.

While a restructured contract for quarterback Dak Prescott could ease some pressure, owner Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are currently projected to be upwards of $4 million over the cap as free agency looms. Jones and the Cowboys hope to strike gold, once again, and find a player in free agency with as much upside as Sieg offered last season.
