Troy Aikman has opened up on why he agreed to work with the Miami Dolphins, pointing to a specific advantage he brings that teams cannot easily replicate internally.

The move initially raised questions given his long-standing association with the Dallas Cowboys. But Aikman’s explanation makes it clear this was about influence and access, not loyalty.

It also highlights how NFL teams are increasingly looking beyond traditional structures when making key decisions. That is where Aikman believes he fits in.

Troy Aikman explains the Dolphins saw value in his league-wide connections

Aikman detailed his reasoning in comments shared via MySportsUpdate, explaining what Miami identified in him.

The focus was not on reputation alone, but on the access and insight he has built through decades in the league.

He said, “I think the Dolphins were wise in understanding my relationships around the league. And knowing I have information that they don’t have or can’t get.

“And I think they were smart in taking advantage of that, whether it was through me or somebody else.”

The point is direct. Aikman is offering something teams cannot easily develop internally, which is why Miami moved to involve him.

Troy Aikman says Dolphins’ role gives him stake despite Cowboys history

Aikman also addressed how the role changes his perspective, even given his deep ties to Dallas.

He said, “The Cowboys have never elected to that, at least with me. You know, maybe they have with others. But no, I don’t feel there is conflict. But I will say I’m pulling for the Dolphins. … because now I have something at stake.

“I think they hired two really talented, wonderful people, and I think that’s gonna prove itself out. … But yeah, I’m pulling for them. I want to see them do well because I feel like my fingerprints are on it as well.”

The comment shows how invested Aikman has become in the Dolphins’ direction, even in a consulting capacity.

It also underlines the nature of the role. This is not symbolic involvement, but something he sees as contributing to real decisions inside the organisation.
