The Dallas Cowboys are beginning to make some moves after a quiet start to free agency.
Dallas hasn't made any splashy additions since the NFL's negotiating window opened. The Cowboys instead focused on re-signing players, most notably retaining defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year extension.
America's Team added more size to the defensive interior on Tuesday morning. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Cowboys signed Solomon Thomas to a two-year deal worth up to $8 million.
Eight years ago, the San Francisco 49ers drafted Thomas with the No. 3 pick. He hasn't met those lofty expectations, but the 295-pounder has carved out an NFL role.
Thomas tallied 26 tackles, 11 pressures, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in 16 games with the New York Jets last season. The Jets allowed 4.1 yards per carry and tied the Washington Commanders for the NFL's 11th-most sacks (43).
Pro Football Focus graded Thomas 41.5 out of 100 in rushing defense, so the 29-year-old probably won't help a Cowboys unit that ranked 29th against the run last season. Yet he could bolster a formidable pass rush that accumulated the third-most sacks (52) despite playing most of the 2024 campaign without DeMarcus Lawrence.
Jerry Jones hasn't made any "all-in" declarations this offseason, and so far the Cowboys are picking their spots with modest investments. They signed guard Robert Jones and running back Javonte Williams to one-year deals.
Robert Jones won't replace Zach Martin, but the 26-year-old at least adds depth to the offensive line following the seven-time All-Pro's retirement. Meanwhile, signing Williams could signal that Dallas will let Rico Dowdle walk after the 1,000-yard season. Williams averaged 4.0 yards per carry over four years with the Denver Broncos.
Along with Martin's retirement, Dallas has also watched the Jacksonville Jaguars poach nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis and offensive tackle Chuma Edoga. Defensive end Chauncey Golston joined the New York Giants after collecting a career-high 5.5 sacks last season.
