The Dallas Cowboys were expected to have a busy free agency, more so knowing that two of their offensive stars, George Pickens and Javonte Williams, could depart once the free market opened. Williams agreed to return on a three-year, $24 million contract.
The Lone Star has a history of complicating things with its free agents and players looking for extensions, more recently with Micah Parsons.
Many fans worry about Jerry Jones making a similar mistake with Pickens. The wide receiver caught 93 passes for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns with the Cowboys. Seeing Pickens leave in the offseason is a big no for many fans.
The chances of seeing him leave are high, but the Cowboys have the option of franchise tagging him. That is exactly what they will do in the coming days.
On Monday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones announced the team’s plans regarding Pickens. They will keep him (or at least secure the chance of being able to trade him) with the tag.
“We think the world of him. We want him here,” Jones said.
“We always want guys here. We’ve franchised players before, obviously we want him here working with the team. It will work itself out in the coming weeks.”
Per Over The Cap, the franchise tag for wide receiver is $28,824,000 in 2026. Pickens reportedly wants to make over $30 million per season on a new contract.
