Dallas Cowboys Make Final Decision on George Pickens’ Future

While the franchise tag ensures Pickens stays in Dallas for at least the upcoming season, Jones did not provide a specific schedule for negotiating a longer-term contract extension. The priority remains securing his services amid ongoing discussions.

Pickens led all Cowboys receivers last season with impressive totals of 1,429 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He also ranked as the most frequently targeted pass-catcher by Prescott and the quarterback group, underscoring his central role in the aerial attack.

The Cowboys originally acquired Pickens in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers back in May of the previous year. In that deal, Dallas received Pickens along with a 2027 sixth-round draft pick, while sending a 2026 third-round selection and a 2027 fifth-rounder to Pittsburgh.

Financially, Pickens earned a base salary of $3,656,000 last season with the Cowboys, resulting in a cap hit of $3,658,205 according to Spotrac data. His performance far exceeded those numbers, justifying the team’s investment in keeping him.

Pickens’ outstanding year earned him selection to the NFL Pro Bowl, where he further distinguished himself by capturing the Offensive MVP honor for his standout showing in the all-star event.

Although the franchise tag provides security for the Cowboys, the situation could still develop complications. Reports, including one from KCCR that referenced Fox Sports, indicate Pickens might opt to bypass the team’s offseason workouts while pushing for a contract that aligns with his desired terms and compensation level.
