The Dallas Cowboys have taken care of an important task ahead of the start of rookie minicamp on Friday: Getting the offseason below the 90-man roster limit.
In reality, the Cowboys are carrying 91 players on the team as part of their roster moves on Wednesday was to re-utilize the International Exemption on second-year defensive tackle Denzel Daxon. That allows them to carry Daxon on the offseason roster without him counting toward the limit and the same applies to the practice squad once it is put together before the regular season.
As for the cuts, it's evident how much of a part the Cowboys' 2025 NFL Draft class played.
The Cowboys are releasing the following players, the team announced:
Davis in particular stands out, having played 15 games in his first couple of years and being a frequent member of the Cowboys practice squad since his arrival in 2022. After the Cowboys double-dipped at running back in Day 3 of the Draft by picking with Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, the writing was on the wall for Davis.
The same goes for interior offensive lineman Jack Anderson following the Cowboys' first-round pick of Tyler Booker. Though Anderson was already a longshot to crack the 53-man roster, Booker's arrival pushes everyone in the depth chart further down. Additionally, the front office picked interior lineman Ajani Cornelius in Day 3.
Finally, fifth-round pick Shemar James out of Florida probably played into the decision of letting Brock Mogensen go at linebacker.
The one Cowboys' roster cut that has little to do with the Draft is that of Earl Bostick Jr., a 2023 UDFA who was among the highest-paid of his class. Unfortunately, the plan to develop him never worked out for Dallas as he leaves the team with no regular season game snaps under his belt.
However, the Cowboys have Asim Richards, Nathan Thomas, and Matt Waletzko as projected backup tackles.
With these moves, the Cowboys can officially finish signing their UDFA class in addition to their draft picks as they gear up toward the 2025 NFL season.
