Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Gets Honest About Trey Lance’s Development
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

There are so many questions surrounding the future of the Dallas Cowboys as the 2024 NFL season continues drawing closer. Jerry Jones decided to keep the band together for one more season after their brutal Wild Card loss to the Green Bay Packers. However, major changes could be on the horizon.

Many believe that Dak Prescott will be gone if the Cowboys fail to win the NFC East and make a deep playoff run. Obviously, Mike McCarthy would be fired from his head coaching position as well.

Prescott is the biggest question. The Cowboys passed on getting an extension done with their franchise quarterback this offseason. If they do move on from Prescott after the 2024 season, there is some buzz that Trey Lance could have a chance to win the job in 2025.

With that in mind, Prescott opened up and talked about his potential future replacement recently.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott Gets Honest About Trey Lance’s Development

In a recent quote, shared by Dallas Cowboys’ reporter Jon Machota, Prescott did not hold back his praise for Lance and the growth he has shown.

“I’m excited for where he is now. … He works his a** off. He’s pushing me. I’m somebody that I don’t like to let other people get more reps than me, and Trey is the person I need to watch, because he’s trying to get up there on the rep count. That’s a testament to him and how much he’s putting into this. I’ve seen it. He’s gotten better. He can play.”

Lance, a former No. 3 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers, has shown flashes of big-time potential. Unfortunately, an injury ended his chance to be the franchise quarterback for the 49ers. Brock Purdy came in and took his job, which led to Lance being traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

Throughout his career thus far, Lance has only appeared in eight games. He has completed 54.9 percent of his pass attempts, which is not good at all, but he threw for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. Lance also picked up 235 yards and a touchdown.

At just 24 years old, Lance still has plenty of time to get his career back on track. He landed in a great situation with the Dallas Cowboys, where he has been able to learn and develop from the sidelines.

Being able to learn this way has been very beneficial for many young quarterbacks. Most recently, Jordan Love has emerged as a potential superstar after sitting for years behind Aaron Rodgers. Lance could be able to replicate that kind of story.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the Dallas Cowboys at the quarterback position. Could Trey Lance end up being a starter for America’s Team in the future? We’ll just have to wait and see.
