Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance Sends Bold Message Before 2024 Season
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

When the Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance, many thought that they were acquiring a future replacement for Dak Prescott. Others felt that Lance would be developed and then either traded or let go in free agency. However, the first option is starting to look like a real possibility.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys’ front office opted not to give Prescott an extension this offseason. That was a bold sign that they are not committing to their franchise quarterback past the 2024 season.

The current belief is that the Cowboys need to make the playoffs and make a run in order to keep the roster relatively intact. If they fall short of those goals, Jones may make some drastic moves. One of those moves could be moving on from Prescott.

If the Dallas Cowboys do move on from Prescott for any reason at the end of the 2024 season, Lance might very well be given a shot to be the next starter.

Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance Sends Bold Message Before 2024 Season

With all of that in mind, Lance has been drawing a lot of attention. Prior to the 2024 season, Lance spoke out and sent out a bold message about his mindset and his NFL future.

“I’m confident, it is much higher than it was when I got into the NFL, for sure. I kind of didn’t know what to expect. I think that’s probably most rookies, if not all of them at one point or another throughout that first year, that first offseason. I feel great about where I’m at. Continuing to get better, continuing to learn and continuing to be a better quarterback.”

Landing with a team like the Dallas Cowboys was the best possible outcome for Lance following his disappointing tenure with the San Francisco 49ers.

In Dallas, he has been able to learn from the sidelines with no pressure on his shoulders. There is no denying the arm talent he possesses that made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

During the eight career games he played with the 49ers, Lance completed 54.9 percent of his pass attempts for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also picked up 235 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

If he hadn’t got hurt during the 2022 season, there is a good chance that Lance would still be the starter. However, he did go down with a brutal injury and the rest is history with Brock Purdy taking over and never looking back.

It will be interesting to see if Lance has a real future with the Dallas Cowboys. Should the Cowboys win big this season and choose to extend Prescott, it seems likely that another team will give Lance a chance. He’s got the talent to play, but now is simply awaiting an opportunity.
