Dallas Cowboys win because Schottenheimer bet on Javonte Williams

The Dallas Cowboys beat the Eagles 38-21 on Monday night to snap a two-game skid and move to 3-4, according to Pro Football Talk. The score is the boring part. How Dallas got there is what the rest of the division should be paying attention to.

A week earlier, coach Brian Schottenheimer took heat for dropping the run in the second half. This time, he did the opposite. Dallas ran 38 times for 204 yards and threw just 27 passes, and Philadelphia finished without a single tackle for loss, PFT reports.

Javonte Williams carried 25 times for a career-best 155 yards and a touchdown. He’s the first Cowboys back to top 150 since Ezekiel Elliott in 2018.

That balance took pressure off Dak Prescott, who went 15 of 27 for 212 yards and three touchdowns. Two went to CeeDee Lamb and one to George Pickens. ESPN’s recap notes Prescott also ran in a two-point conversion himself to make it 28-21.

Coming in, he had thrown four interceptions over his previous two games, so leaning on the run was as much about protecting him as anything.

Cowboys’ rival Eagles are running out of healthy players faster than time

Philadelphia is 2-5 and has dropped five straight, its longest losing streak since 2016. The injury list tells most of the story. Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season because of blood clots in his lungs, so Tanner McKee made his second consecutive start and went 23 of 35 for 211 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks didn’t play at all.

Then the backfield thinned out. Saquon Barkley returned from a two-game hamstring absence and left with a back injury after seven carries for 62 yards and a score.

Dameon Pierce went down in the fourth quarter, per NBC Sports. Rookie receiver Makai Lemon was a bright spot with seven catches for 67 yards and his first career touchdown, according to the Eagles’ own recap.

Dallas still has to prove this wasn’t a one-night fix

ESPN described the Cowboys as playing for a division title that’s up for grabs, and that’s fair given how muddy the NFC East looks. But Dallas came into this game allowing 149.8 rushing yards per game, a worrisome number. One game of tidy football doesn’t erase that.

The real test is whether Schottenheimer keeps the same plan when a game gets tight, and the old instincts kick in.

Javonte Williams and the line did their job. If Dallas keeps feeding him, the offense gets simpler, and Prescott gets easier looks to Lamb and Pickens.

For Philadelphia, the next stop is a Sunday-night visit to Washington in Week 8, NBC Sports Philadelphia notes. Whether Barkley and Pierce can play is the first question. Whether this season is already past saving is the one that follows it.
