Damar Hamlin returning to the field to be one of the Buffalo Bills' best defensive players in 2024 made for one of the most heartwarming stories of the season.
In finishing third on the team with 89 tackles across 14 starts — as well as adding five passes defended, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery — the safety finished fourth in the Comeback Player of the Year voting.
However, his time in Buffalo could be soon coming to a close.
With the NFL's free agency negotiation period opening on Monday, the 26-year-old made a lengthy social media post that hinted at his tenure with the Bills drawing to a close.
The 20-slide Instagram post featured images from throughout his four-year run since the Bills selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft out of Pitt and inspirational quotes.
Among the photos was one with Bills athletic trainers Nate Breske and Denny Kellington, who helped save his life when he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field Jan. 2, 2023.
While Hamlin didn't officially say he was gone, the writing seemingly is on the wall. Bills safety Cole Bishop shared Hamlin's post with the caption "My brother!" to his Instagram story, to which Hamlin responded "4L baby bro " — meaning "for life."
The Bills have already extended the contracts of quarterback Josh Allen, wide receiver Khalil Shakir, edge rusher Greg Rousseau and linebacker Terrel Bernard. They've also agreed to terms with several free agents, including defensive lineman Michael Hoecht and wide receiver Josh Palmer.
Hamlin remains one of the top free-agent safeties on the market. Eight free-agent safeties have already agreed to eight-figure deals, and while Hamlin may not approach that annual value, he figures to add depth to someone's defense next year, likely away from Buffalo.
