Buccaneers defensive back Damarion “Pepe” Williams had an outstanding performance in the team’s 24-16 win over the New York Jets in the team’s preseason opener.

He led Tampa Bay with 12 total tackles against the New York Jets.

Williams also recorded a sack, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup in Friday night’s 24-16 victory. His performance stood out throughout his time on the field.

The most impressive part of Williams’ performance was his tackling. Ball skills are obviously important for cornerbacks, but tackling remains a critical part of the position.

Too many corners can excel in coverage but struggle when offenses run directly at them. Williams showed no hesitation about getting involved against the Jets.

Williams Brings Physicality

Williams consistently finished plays when he got his hands on opposing players. He also showed a willingness to attack the line of scrimmage and make plays near the box.

One of his notable stops came against Kene Nwangwu. Williams stopped Nwangwu after a five-yard run on first down.

That type of physicality could help Williams separate himself during the Buccaneers’ roster competition.

Williams Could Force a Roster Decision

The numbers could make Tampa Bay’s cornerback situation difficult when roster cuts arrive. The Buccaneers typically carry no more than six cornerbacks on their 53-man roster.

However, the current circumstances could make carrying seven worth considering. Zyon McCollum is dealing with an injury and missed both Jets joint practices.

Benjamin Morrison is also dealing with recurring hamstring issues. Jacob Parrish, Keionte Scott, and Josh Hayes currently round out the top five.

That could open the door for both Williams and Ayden Garnes to make the roster. Carrying seven corners may not be the usual approach, but Williams is making the decision harder to avoid.
