Dan Campbell Engineered A Unique Lions Practice
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Head coach Dan Campbell has been anything but conventional for the Detroit Lions.

He could be one with the players by joining them at practice or crying for them after another loss.

Then there are his iconic soundbites of rallying his players to bite off kneecaps and sharing his favorite coffee.

Campbell is also unapologetic with his choice of music, especially heavy metal bands like Metallica.

While the wins are still hard to come by, Lions players genuinely love to be with him.

But this time around, Campbell tried another unusual approach with his squad.

Lions reporter Dannie Rogers tweeted, “#Lions just went through an entire player lead practice. No coaches were out on the field beside Campbell. He quietly observed. Taylor Decker says it was a unique practice and he’s never experienced one like it before.”

With Campbell, the Lions have to expect the unexpected, even not having coaches at practice.

In some ways, it helps the squad bond together, especially during times of adversity.

It could also be Campbell’s way of instilling confidence in his troops that they got this.

Final Stretches Of Preparation Before The Regular Season

So far, his strategy has delivered mixed results.

After losing to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 of the preseason, they bounced back against the Indianapolis Colts eight days later.

The Lions will wrap up their preseason against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 28.

From there, they will open the regular season at home against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 11.

By then, it will be seen if Campbell’s unconventional approach worked.

The Lions also have an opportunity to make some headway because they will be facing the Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks in the first four weeks.
