The Detroit Lions have been very good these last two years. They went to the NFC Championship game in 2023 and probably could have won the Super Bowl in 2024 has they had not dealt with so many injuries.
If you're a young player on this team, you might just be used to the good times and think they're never going to stop. Lions head coach Dan Campbell has a sobering message for those players.
"You'd like to believe that you can make things go your way most of the time if you play your style of football in your own point. But sometimes you need things to fall in line, you know. So the lesson of that is, man, you make the most of every moment that you got and and make sure that the young guys know, there's me, some young guys, you know, we get back to where we want to go, that they think this is the way it's always going to be like that. This could be your only shot to get in, kids. So what are you going to do to help us win this? And you this and get to the next one? Get to the next one? So, you know, you learn each time."
Kind of scary to think about, but he's right. You never know. We've seen football teams go from really good to really bad at breakneck speed before. Campbell knows this.
In his second season as a member of the New York Giants, that team went all the way to the Super Bowl. They lost to the Ravens in that game, but probably felt like they had a chance eot go right back. They went 7-9 the next year and missed the playoffs.
Campbell never got a chance to play in the Super Bowl again and only played in two more playoff games. You have to believe that he's giving his young guys that knowledge, and you're hoping that they're taking it in. Nothing is promised in the NFL.
