Lost in the huge 38-30 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football was that the Lions tried what would have been an NFL record 67-yard field goal with Jake Bates in the second quarter. Bates missed the kick when it sailed to the left a bit. There's no doubt that he had the leg to get it there, and there's no doubt we know he can make a long kick. He hit a 64-yarder for the Michigan Panthers in the UFL. After hearing from Lions head coach Dan Campbell on Tuesday, we know he'll have more shots.

The Lions plan to continue to let Jake Bates have long field goal attempts

Campbell was asked if he had seen Bates make kicks longer than 67 yards at practice, and he talked about how he appreciated Bates giving it a shot.

"Yeah, over that. So look, I appreciated the fact he gave it a go." Campbell said. "I thought he gave it a fair shot. He went up there and, you know, it's a little bit off, but, you know, I appreciate that. We're going to keep doing that, too. He'll make those."

Jake Bates Kicking Facts

  • Jake Bates' career high is the 64-yard field goal he hit for the Michigan Panthers in the UFL
  • His long in the NFL was a 58-yarder against the Vikings in 2024
  • He attempted a 65-yarder against the Bears last year and missed

It certainly would be beneficial to the Lions if Bates is able to start making these 60-plus yard kicks because it opens up a whole new world of point scoring for this team. They're very good on offense, but it would be nice to know that if they stalled out midfield and it's too much to go for it on fourth down, they can still get bailed out by Bates on a long kick. We'll see as the season goes on just how much the Lions are going to let him attempt stuff like this.
