All week, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff attempted to downplay the meaning of playing and competing against his former team and importance of the team winning their first playoff game in decades.
The current roster has repeatedly expressed they do not shoulder the burden of years of futility, but understand why the Lions past still haunts fans and is brought up by pundits.
After Goff left the field victorious against the Los Angles Rams, a locker room chanting his name awaited.
Detroit's veteran signal-caller is among the most popular members of the roster, due to his demeanor and competitive spirit.
Prior to the game, fans chanted his name, seemingly wanting to credit the veteran for the team being in their current position and to dismiss the national narrative that the game was about the return of Matthew Stafford to Ford Field.
“Yeah, they’re amazing, man. They’re amazing. I’m very fortunate to be playing for these people here and to be playing for this city and this organization and to be able to enjoy special moments like that. I don’t take it for granted," said Goff, when asked about the fans remaining after the game "And things happen in weird ways and it’s been a three-year road to get to this point to enjoy that moment, and it was a sweet one. But with that being said, we’ve got some more games that we want to win now.”
Detroit's third-year head coach gave the 29-year-old a game ball, after discussing why general manager Brad Holmes deserved one also for the work he has done to build a competitive roster.
"You're good enough for Detroit, Jared Goff," Campbell expressed.
A celebratory video closes with Goff excitedly pumping his team, reminding his teammates there is still more to accomplish.
