Frank Ragnow is gone. It sucks that this is the case since he was the centerpiece and anchor of the entire Detroit Lions offensive line, but now the Lions havr to find their new pieces and figure things out.
The immediate thought was that the Lions would probably move Graham Glasgow there since he's played a little center for the Lions before, but that may not be the move for the Lions.
On Thursday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke to local media and seemed to confirm the idea that center is really anyone's game going into training camp.
"It doesn't mean you won't have growing pains, but it can happen fast. You know, the development can happen fast. I'm saying, for example, you put Tate (Ratledge) in there, and if not, you know, is it Graham (Glasgow) at guard who's helping him out? Or is Graham your center? Or is it one of these other guys, is it? Kingsley (Eguakun), is it? So we're going to have options. That's why we're excited about training camp. We're going to find this out. These guys go at it. We just signed Trystan Colon. You know there's another option. Don't know a lot about him because he just got here, but we're going to have plenty. We still got Yode (Kayode Awosika) here. We've got guys standing out."
So there you go, there is no answer at this point. Glasgow still makes the most sense because he is the one and only vet on the interior, but Campbell talked about the possibility of having veterans at the guards helping out someone less experienced in the middle. So maybe they go with Graham at guard.
Ratledge has been taking snaps at center during OTAs, but we haven't seen him going live at the position just yet, and that makes a big difference. But here's their chance to grow someone long term there, but you can't underestimate his play at guard. He's good there.
Egukun is the guy that nobody is paying attention to right now. Dan Campbell is. He mentioned him multiple times on Thursday. Eguakun is the only guy on this team who's been a true center basically his whole football career. He showed some nice flashes last season and nearly made the 53-man roster. He has a real shot at winning this role. Do not count him out.
Colon was a center in college at Missouri and had a few starts for the Ravens, but hasn't been playing much at center since 2022. Those starts in Baltimore were really good, though.
Awosika is an interesting name because he's never played center in the NFL or in college. Perhaps Campbell was looking at him as another veteran guard option.
So there you go, training camp is going to be really interesting because anyone can get their game out there and find themselves in the starting role. We'll see what happens.
