The Washington Commanders believe they got a genuine steal when talented cornerback Trey Amos fell into their laps at No. 61 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. They also believe the back injury that caused his stock to slip won't be a major concern when push comes to shove.
Reports suggested that a back issue for Amos popped up during pre-draft medical assessments. It was enough for teams to look elsewhere, leaving the projected first-round pick languishing at the end of the second round before Washington ended his slide. This provides the former Ole Miss standout with all the motivation needed to silence his doubters en route to making an immediate contribution.
The player didn't seem overly concerned about the prognosis when speaking to the media at Washington's recent rookie minicamp. This was a sentiment echoed by head coach Dan Quinn, who felt comfortable with Amos' medical checks to pull the trigger on Day 2.

The Commanders wouldn't have made this move if they didn't have complete conviction in Amos' long-term outlook. Washington's front office is thorough and more professional than ever under Adam Peters. If the general manager was satisfied, that should be enough to alleviate any lingering worries among the fan base.
If Amos gets a good run of luck on the health front and this medical red flag turns out to be nothing, it's hard to envisage a scenario where he doesn't help the Commanders. He's arguably the best press-man cover corner in this year's class. He's physical, athletic, and anticipates things quickly. This is the exact prototype that Quinn's has had success with previously, which only adds to the intrigue.
If Amos adjusts quickly, he could form a highly productive outside tandem with Marshon Lattimore if the four-time Pro Bowler bounces back from an injury-ravaged campaign. This could also see Mike Sainristil spend more time in the slot, which is where he thrived in college at Michigan and over the first few games of his pro career.
There's a little apprehension surrounding Amos after this post-draft revelation. But looking at the confidence Quinn has and the player brushing it off as a non-factor, fans aren't overly concerned anymore.
Still, it's something to keep an eye on as Amos' career in Washington unfolds.
