Daniel Jones admits he ‘wasn’t fired up’ about Giants wanting to draft a quarterback
Chris Pedota / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Giants had the most unpredictable 2023-24 season. After losing Daniel Jones to an Achilles injury, the team was forced to rely on backup QBs for the remainder of the year. Despite finding a diamond in the rough in Tommy DeVito, the Giants remain inclined to return to Jones as the team’s starter.

However, in the run-up to the 2024 Draft, the New York Giants were giving some serious thought to the possibility of drafting a quarterback with their first-round pick. The team eventually decided to stick with Daniel Jones for now and opted to draft Malik Nabers, a wide receiver out of LSU with the sixth overall pick in the draft.

The entire process wherein the team doubted his capabilities did not sit well with Jones, who at his latest press conference revealed what was going through his head as he heard the news of this.

I wasn't fired up about it. I think that it's part of it at this level and what I can do is focus on myself, getting healthy, and playing the best football I can play...that's my job and that's what I am going to do. Daniel Jones said

Jones understands the NFL is a business and, ultimately, there is nothing that he can do when it comes to the team’s roster decisions.

Daniel Jones is looking forward to redeem himself this season

As Jones gears up to get ready for the upcoming season, he has a lot at stake. This year essentially determines if he will continue to be a starting quarterback in the NFL or not. The Giants offered him a massive four-year contract worth $160 million before the commencement of the 2023-24 season.

He had his best season in 2022-23. However, fans believed it was premature on part of the team to offer Jones such a massive contract.

Before going down in Week 5 of the 2023 season, Jones was having a bad year. He threw for 909 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions with a QBR of 36.3. This year, he will face a bigger challenge as he will be without star running back Saquon Barkley for the first time in his career. The running back, who had been revered as the star of the Giants offense, signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this off-season.

The Giants used their picks in the draft to provide Daniel Jones with key weapons on offense. Their first-round pick was Malik Nabers, wide receiver out of LSU. A key addition to their depth chart, Nabers will be relied upon heavily by Jones. The team further drafted Theo Johnson at tight end with the fourth round pick and Tyrone Tracy Jr. at the running back position in the fifth round of the draft.
