Before his release this week, Daniel Jones had an unusual final act with the New York Giants.
The Giants announced on Friday morning that the $160 million quarterback had been waived, a rapid escalation after he had been demoted to third string during the team's bye week. ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported that Jones met with Giants president and owner John Mara and had discussions with head coach Brian Daboll in the hours before his release, with the two sides agreeing it would be best to cut ties entirely.
Mara shared praise for Jones afterward, saying he had shown class in handling the situation.
"Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first-class in every way," Mara said. "His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out."
Jones is earning more praise for the way he handled being benched. NFL Network insider Mike Garofolo reported that after being demoted to third string behind new starter Tommy DeVito and veteran backup Drew Lock, Jones offered to play another role for the team -- scout team defense.
"Context on Daniel Jones serving as scout-team safety the other day: He volunteered, sources say," Garofolo shared in a post on X. "The #Giants needed bodies on defense for the walk-through. He went out there on his own, trying to help out. Every indication I've gotten is he handled this week with class."
There had been growing speculation that the Giants were preparing to move on from Jones, who has struggled since signing a $160 million contract in March 2023. The Giants fell to 2-8, nearing playoff elimination and facing a $23 million injury guarantee had he continued playing and been hurt this season.
The decision to waive Jones means he will have the chance to play for another team this season, though he is expected to clear waivers. Any team claiming him would be on the hook for close to $12 million for the remainder of the season, Raanan reported.
