Former Packers receiver Davante Adams sounded a little wistful as he talked about his old team. Maybe he misses a squad with a quarterback like Jordan Love, who is secure in his QB1 spot on the depth chart.
Adams is entering his third season with the Las Vegas Raiders, a team with a lot of instability at quarterback. That could continue into the fall since the Raiders failed to land one of the six first-round quarterbacks from last week’s NFL Draft.
Adams appeared on the podcast, The Rush, this week alongside his Raiders teammate Maxx Crosby. Adams heaped a ton of praise on Love, who stepped into the starting role after Aaron Rodgers forced a trade to the Jets.
“In hindsight … the kid is a fxxxxxg baller, man. I’m so happy for him,” Adams said of Love. “I haven’t had the chance to truly sit down and talk with him, but I want to tell him at some point ‘I definitely don’t regret changing (teams), but I’m super proud of what you’ve done.”
Adams continued, as if he was speaking to Love. “‘If there was a way I could pull you over here and drag you with me that would have been cool too.’ Because, obviously, we saw what he did at the end of the year. I don’t regret what I did, but, at the same time, it’s definitely you look back on it like ‘damn that boy kind of balling right now.’”
Jordan Love caught fire to lead Packers to playoffs
Love did lead the Packers to the playoffs. And Green Bay then dismantled the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium to win the wildcard round. They played the 49ers close in San Francisco in the divisional round. Rather than dwell on what-could-have-been, the Packers are opting for what will be.
Adams, meanwhile, is hoping for an easier 2024. He’s still putting up the stats with the Raiders, catching 100 and 103 passes in his first two seasons in Vegas. Adams has strung together four straight years of at least 100 catches and 1,000 yards. He’s one of the best receivers in the NFL.
The Raiders quarterback situation is in flux. Adams began his career with the Raiders catching passes from former Fresno State teammate Derek Carr, who now is with the Saints. Then the Raiders signed Jimmy Garoppolo. Eventually, Garollolo gave way to Aidan O’Connell. For this season, Vegas signed journeyman Gardner Minshew, who last was with the Colts. Minshew took over for Anthony Richardson early last season and nearly led Indianapolis to the playoffs. Instead, the upstart Houston Texans won the division.
The Raiders, with the 13th pick, thought they had a chance for one of the elite quarterbacks in last week’s NFL Draft. Instead, the Falcons, at pick No. 8, messed up the quarterback symmetry by selecting Michael Penix Jr. So at pick No. 13, the Raiders selected tight end Brock Bowers, who should make any quarterback life’s much easier.
