2024 has been a year to forget for Davante Adams.
When the Las Vegas Raiders traded the former All-Pro wide receiver to the New York Jets in mid-October, it was supposed to kickstart the latter’s offense. Even though the Jets had fired then-head coach Robert Saleh, the reunion of Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers was set to put their season back on track.
A little under two months since the trade, and the Jets have been nowhere close to meeting expectations. The Jets are 3-9 on the year, just one win better than the Raiders. The postseason is all but mathematically impossible to reach. With each loss, the third-round pick that the Raiders got in the Adams deal continues to move higher in the draft order.
Despite the constant losing, however, Adams has stated that he has no regrets with how the season or the trade has played out.
“[I’m] extremely disappointed in the win-loss column, but as far as making the move, I don’t regret it. Not even one bit,” Adams said during a press conference Wednesday. “Nobody really, period, knows what I was going through and knows the reasons why it had to be this way.”
While Adams has never publicly stated the reasons for his departure from the Raiders, it is likely that the relationship between player and team took a turn when the Raiders released former quarterback Derek Carr in 2023. Adams, Carr’s teammate at Fresno State, joined the Raiders in 2022 to reunite with his former quarterback, and the chemistry resulted in a great year for him with 1,512 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. Since Carr’s departure, however, the Raiders have endured inconsistency at the quarterback position, likely resulting in Adams’s frustration and eventual trade.
Fans were able to see Adams’s emotions firsthand on the Netflix series “Receiver,” when he talked about wanting to leave in an expletive-laced tirade on the sideline during the Raiders’ Week 6 game against the New England Patriots last season.
Now trying to get back on track with a new team, Adams still sees a future with the Jets.
“I would love to be a part of this football team [next year]. I love these guys. I came in day one, I was welcomed,” Adams said. “It’s a business and there’s a lot of pieces contractually. Obviously with Aaron’s future and a lot of things I can’t control. Just going to finish this year off strong. Hopefully we do enough to where everybody’s feeling like it’s the right thing to do for us to stay here. After this year, we’ll assess and figure it out.”
What is interesting about Adams’s statement is how he uses the word “us,” implying his future in New York is tied to Rodgers. That’s not a good scenario for the Jets, as it is unlikely that Rodgers will return to the team in 2025.
Should Rodgers leave, Raiders fans might get a little schadenfreude watching Adams do to the Jets what he did to their team.
