The 2026 NFL Draft is right around the corner, and we've got you covered with in-depth scouting reports for all of this year's top prospects.

Texas Tech's David Bailey is one of the best edge defender prospects in a loaded class at the position, and he might just top the board for some teams. His elite explosiveness helped him racked up 14.5 sacks for the Red Raiders last season, tying him for the FBS lead. His speed off the ball and proven production could make Bailey a top-five pick.

Here's everything NFL fans need to know about Bailey heading into this year's draft:

David Bailey's Strengths

You know that pass rusher who is so quick off the ball, it looks like he’s offsides on just about every snap? That’s Bailey, who has an explosive first step that borders on unfair, and likely keeps opposing offensive tackles up at night. He’s just just a speed demon, either; Bailey can convert that speed to power with explosive hands and a nasty bull rush, and he’s got a deep bag of initial moves and counter attacks that ensure he gets to the quarterback by any means necessary. He’s a high-motor defender who plays at full tilt for all four quarters and beyond, and his ability to create pressures and finish them with sacks, especially in clutch situations, is one of the most valuable traits any prospect can have, regardless of position. He’s surprisingly comfortable dropping into zone coverage when asked, and has the athleticism and versatility to fit multiple schemes.

David Bailey's Weaknesses

Bailey lacks ideal bulk for the position, which can bite him when he’s forced to anchor on the edge against the run. Powerful tackles and pulling guards can drive him out of the play when they get locked onto his frame, and he can be just a split-second too late when trying to diagnose zone-read action, leading to missed opportunities for tackles in the backfield. He can be too aggressive in overpursuing the ball carrier at times, leaving the edge open for cutbacks.

Final Analysis

If you’re looking for the most explosive edge rusher in this class, Bailey is your guy. There are more complete players in this position group, but nobody who brings the juice off the snap and around the arc like he does. Adding some power and lower body strength would help his effectiveness against the run, but his ability to impact the quarterback with speed off the edge is enough to warrant a top-10 selection.
