Bear Bachmeier is becoming one of those guys you just kind of root for, whether you’re a BYU fan or not. And now, it looks like he’s winning over some of the national crowd, too. Former ESPN analyst and college football personality David Pollack, who’s not exactly known for handing out compliments like candy, gave the Cougars’ freshman quarterback a subtle but meaningful nod this week.
Pollack quote-tweeted a video of Bachmeier playing acoustic guitar at an old folks home in Provo, a clip that’s about as wholesome as it gets. No cameras in his face, no crew following him around. Just a kid standing up with his brother, strumming chords, and trying to bring a little joy to the room. Pollack’s caption? “I grow to appreciate the Bachmeier Effect more and more each day.”

That’s not nothing. Pollack isn’t one to gas up players for doing the bare minimum. If anything, he’s usually pretty blunt and definitely not shy about questioning hype when he sees it. So for him to publicly tip his cap like that says a lot about how Bachmeier is being viewed outside the bubble in Provo.
This is the kind of thing that BYU fans have seen coming all year. Bachmeier runs hard, plays clean, and doesn’t seem to care much about anything other than best serving the people in his locker room and the ones in his community. He’s not loud. He’s not flashy. But he’s damn good, and more people are starting to notice that he’s a little different.
BYU’s had guys in the past who put up big numbers and got attention for their play, but it’s rare to see a freshman have this kind of impact both on and off the field. The “Bachmeier Effect” started out as a fun fan thing, but if David Pollack’s weighing in, it might have a little more staying power than people thought.
At this rate, if Bear keeps playing like he is and showing up in spots like this, he’s not just going to be a local favorite. He’s going to be one of the faces of what BYU football wants to be. And honestly, that tracks.
