Every season, there is always a team that rises in the standings after having a disappointing year.
Last season, the Indiana Hoosiers surged from near the bottom of the Big Ten to near the top, ultimately making it to the College Football Playoff. The question now is whether there will be a team this year that makes a significant leap.
On his podcast "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack," college football analyst David Pollack predicted a possible candidate from the ACC. He identified the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who finished sixth in the ACC last year, as a team that could potentially advance to the conference championship game.
"I would go with Georgia Tech," Pollack said. "I can see that because Haynes King is in Year 27 or is it 28? It feels like it's been a while. ... You've got some weapons. You've got an established culture. You also have a coach that I believe everybody believes in."
King threw for 2,114 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, while rushing for 587 yards and 11 touchdowns. Pollack is optimistic about Georgia Tech because of King, but he isn't ready to predict a leap that would take the team to the ACC Championship Game just yet. However, he wouldn't be surprised if the Yellow Jackets made a strong push.
ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) measures team strength and serves as a predictor of future performance. The FPI is also optimistic about the Yellow Jackets this year, projecting them to finish fifth in the ACC with a record of 7-5. Georgia Tech has recorded a 7-6 finish in the past two seasons.
The FPI gives Georgia Tech a 6.1% chance of winning the conference and a 9.9% chance of making the College Football Playoff. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets possess the potential to be a spoiler. Last season, they achieved notable victories against the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles and the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes.
They nearly defeated the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs, who went on to become the SEC champions, in an exciting eight-overtime game that ended with a score of 44-42. This team has the potential to exceed expectations and could make a leap to the ACC Championship Game in 2025.
