Day 1 of NFL free agency spells trouble for yet unknown Cowboys starter

Day one of NFL free agency was in full swing... if you're a fan of one of the 31 other NFL teams not in Dallas, Texas.

If you're a Cowboys fan, you will have to wait a couple of weeks for anything "big" to happen. 

For a fan, it is infuriating to see your favorite team take this approach year after year.

We have seen teams get to the Super Bowl after spending big, like the Rams in 2021. The Rams were most definitely "All-In" and by many people's standards, they traded away their future for a shot at a Super Bowl back in 2021. 

Well, guess what?

The Rams not only won the Super Bowl, they are back spending money in free agency. 

The Jones family lied to us.

Not three months ago Jerry Jones said the Cowboys were going "all-in."

Here we are after day one of NFL free agency and as it stands, that is a lie. We have seen division rivals get significantly better, specifically at the edge rusher unit.

Dan Quinn, the new head coach of the Commanders took a Cowboy with him to Washington and brought Dorance Armstrong to the team.

The Philadelphia Eagles added Bryce Huff, in a big $51 million deal.

Now the Giants might make the biggest move of them all: It is being reported that the Giants are making a move for Carolina Panthers edge rusher, Brian Burns. 

This is frightening to the Cowboys for a primary reason.

The Cowboys don't have a left tackle.

The Cowboys let their their All-Pro tackle Tyron Smith walk in free agency.

The only other true left tackle on roster, Chuma Edoga is currently a free-agent.

In other words, as it stands, there is not a left tackle on the Cowboys roster. There's Asim Richards, who the Cowboys seem to consider a swing guy, having played him at LT, LG, and RG.

Now you may say, move Tyler Smith out to left tackle, and find a guard. 

As we have previously discussed, Tyler just had an All-Pro season at guard, you should think long and hard before moving him from a position he is clearly elite at. 

So whoever the starter is in 2024, is already stepping into a frightening gauntlet of rushers that he will have to face within the division.

So where does this leave the Cowboys?

Frankly, it leaves them in the same state of no man's land they've been in since the turn of the century.

The way the Cowboys are managed, they are obsessed with staying relevant in the news. They are content with being good enough to be in talks, but never good enough to go out and win the whole thing. 

The Jones family will feed the media headline after headline. It will drive attention to the organization, get the fans excited, and get them talking.

And year after year they are let down.

It is a tale as old as time if you're a Cowboys fan, and one that doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon.
