NFL owners have officially voted to approve a new rule that will permit running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, linebackers and defensive backs to wear single-digit numbers on their jerseys beginning with the 2021 season.
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook are two stars considering making a change for later this year.
Hopkins teased on Instagram that he could go from No. 10 to No. 6:
Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Hopkins wore No. 6 in college.
Cook, meanwhile, rocked No. 4 at Florida State and could revert to that number from his current No. 33. According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the ball-carrier is currently "looking at the inventory costs" that would come with making the switch.
PFT's Mike Florio explains that a player must spend his own money to acquire unsold jerseys before moving to a new number for the 2021 season. A player could change his number for the 2022 campaign at no cost.
Cook put pen to paper on a five-year contract extension on Sept. 12 that, per Over the Cap, could be worth up to $63 million. Needless to say, he can afford to buy any unsold inventory of jerseys this spring or summer.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback and seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has made it clear he's not a fan of the rule change.
