DeAndre Hopkins hoping to continue Chiefs' new WR Super Bowl tradition

With the Kansas City Chiefs finalizing a trade with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday for wideout DeAndre Hopkins, the five-time Pro Bowler will look to help his new team become the first three-time defending Super Bowl champion in February.

This is the third straight season where the Chiefs have saved a wide receiver from a less-than-ideal quarterback scenario to play with Kansas City signal-caller Patrick Mahomes. Hopkins is hoping to have the same success as his predecessors — Kadarius Toney and Mecole Hardman.

Toney was selected by the New York Giants with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and, after failing to find success with Big Blue quarterback Daniel Jones, was traded to the Chiefs in October 2022.

The Florida product was crucial in Kansas City's run to a championship that winter, recording six punt returns for 112 yards in the playoffs. That included a clutch 65-yarder during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles to help set up a go-ahead touchdown. Toney added a five-yard touchdown reception in the victory as well.

His 2023 season was filled with drops and mental mistakes, however, which led to him being inactive for the final seven games of the campaign, including all four Chiefs playoff tilts on their way to a second consecutive title.

After spending much of this past summer fighting to make the team's roster, Toney was cut in late August.

Hardman was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 2019 and was a Pro Bowler during his rookie campaign, finishing third in the NFL that year in kick returns (27), kick return yards (704) and kick and punt return yards (871). Hardman ended the season with what is still a career-high 1,426 all-purpose yards.

After spending the first four seasons of his career with Mahomes and company, the Georgia product signed with the New York Jets in March 2023. Hardman registered just one catch for six yards on three targets across five games with the team while taking the field alongside backup signal-caller Zach Wilson.

He was traded back to the Chiefs last October and after limited production in six regular-season contests, he struggled in the squad's first three playoff games. Then in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers, despite playing only 19 snaps, Hardman finished with three catches for 57 yards and the game-winning touchdown reception in overtime.

Hopkins opened his career with seven seasons with the Houston Texans and three with the Arizona Cardinals before signing with the Titans in July 2023. He had his seventh career 1,000-yard receiving season last year, finishing the campaign with 75 catches for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns.

With second-year pro Will Levis (and now 29-year-old Mason Rudolph) under center, the entire Tennessee passing attack has struggled. Hopkins has posted just 15 receptions for 173 yards and one touchdown on 21 targets through six games, but the move to Kansas City could prove hugely beneficial for both sides.
