As the Kansas City Chiefs struggle to get healthy wide receivers for Patrick Mahomes to throw to, a potential option they could have had helping them out is tearing it up for his new team. DeAndre Hopkins has played two games for the Baltimore Ravens and has been a huge addition to that offense.
In Week 1, Hopkins had a crazy touchdown grab against the Bills. In Week 2, while he didn't score on the play, Hopkins had another insane grab that put the Ravens on the one-yard line. To say that the Chiefs could use a reliable receiver like this early in the season is an understatement.
Rashee Rice is out until Week 7 due to his suspension, Xavier Worthy was injured on the first drive of the season, and Jalen Royals is also out. This means that Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton have to carry the load at receiver. Hopkins would have been a massive addition to this group.
Hopkins was traded to Kansas City ahead of the deadline last season and had 437 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. He was brought in to give them a boost on offense and he helped fill that role for sure.
Now, hindsight is 20/20, as the Chiefs clearly felt like they had better options at wide receiver and didn't want to pay Hopkins in the offseason. He's 33 years old so it made sense that K.C. might not have wanted to pay him. Hopkins signed a very affordable deal with the Ravens and he's shown that he was well-worth that contract in just two games.
If the Chiefs wide receiver situation continues to look grim and Hopkins continues to make key plays like he has in two games with the Ravens, this move will only look worse. Let's hope the Chiefs receivers step it up and this doesn't become a talking point around the league.
