There was a significant amount of fanfare attached to Deebo Samuel Sr.'s trade to the Washington Commanders this offseason. One team insider highlighted the wide receiver's superpower capable of taking Kliff Kingsbury's offense to even greater heights in 2025.
Samuel is coming off a down year by his typically high standards. The Commanders only had to give up a fifth-round pick to secure his services from the San Francisco 49ers. It's minuscule compared to what he might potentially bring to the franchise, and general manager Adam Peters will move off him with no further financial ramifications attached if things don't go well.
That's a scenario the Commanders are Samuel are looking to avoid. There's a renewed focus and purpose being displayed by the player this offseason. He's lost some weight and looks in tremendous shape over Washington's offseason program. The former second-round pick is eager to silence his doubters, and this represents the best possible environment to shut everyone up.
John Keim from ESPN highlighted the biggest factor of all that provides hope Samuel can thrive in Washington. The respected insider pointed to the wideout's ability with the ball in his hands, coupled with how many screens Kingsbury called for quarterback Jayden Daniels last season, as something that should give fans optimism entering the new campaign.
He fits into what Washington likes to do. He excels on screens and the Commanders have added athleticism to their line this season, which should help open holes in space. Quarterback Jayden Daniels threw 52 screen passes, sixth most in the NFL. [Deebo] Samuel also is adept at breaking tackles on short passes. Daniels attempted 26% of his passes at or behind the line of scrimmage (12th most in the NFL). Samuel gained 61.5% of his receiving yards after the catch, 10th most last season among receivers with at least 25 receptions. He averaged 8.1 yards after the catch, third most among receivers with at least 25 receptions.John Keim
Keim hit the point perfectly. Quick passes into the hands of his playmakers are a core part of Kingsbury's offensive strategy. There haven't been many better yards after the catch weapons than Samuel since he entered the league, so it's got the scope to shake the dynamic considerably.
Keeping Samuel healthy and motivated is key.
The Commanders hired Wes Welker primarily due to his previous success working with the South Carolina product. Having the added motivation of being in a contract year should also keep urgency high. And there's the small matter of criticism around the media and the Niners casting him aside with a $34.1 million bill to factor into the equation.
Samuel has a point to prove. And if the same production in the short game continues, this has the making of an absolute steal.
