Nothing stings quite like watching a player you just cut go sign with a division rival for more money than you were paying him. That’s exactly what the Carolina Panthers are living through right now, and it’s the kind of front-office gut punch that makes fans grip their armrests a little tighter.
A’Shawn Robinson is headed to Tampa Bay on a fully guaranteed one-year, $10 million deal, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. The Panthers had just released Robinson on Tuesday, freeing up $10.5 million in cap space. By Wednesday, Robinson had not only found a new home, but he’d found one right down the road in the same division. And he’s making $1.5 million more than Carolina was set to pay him.
The #Bucs are signing former #Panthers standout DL A'Shawn Robinson to a 1-year, $10M fully guaranteed deal, per The Insiders. A raise after he was due to make $8.5M with Carolina.

Robinson turns 31 on March 21, which means he’s not exactly a spring chicken. But don’t let the birthday candles fool you. This guy has been one of the more consistent defensive linemen in the league for a decade now.
Robinson was a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions back in 2016. Since then, he’s bounced around the league in a way that tells you teams keep wanting him: four years in Detroit, three with the Los Angeles Rams, one with the New York Giants, and two solid seasons with the Carolina Panthers. That’s 143 regular-season appearances and 106 starts. The man shows up, suits up, and handles business.
In his two years with Carolina, Robinson started 33 of 34 games. He racked up 145 combined tackles, 8.0 sacks, 55 pressures, 65 stops, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 4 passes defensed. For a team that was rebuilding and had very little to show for it on the defensive side, Robinson was one of the few bright spots worth keeping.
And they cut him anyway. To be fair, the Panthers needed the cap space after signing Linebacker Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd.
Here’s where it gets genuinely interesting. The Buccaneers finished last season with the No. 5-ranked rush defense in the league. That’s not an accident. That is what happens when you have Vita Vea anchoring your defensive line. The guy is a mountain in shoulder pads.
Now Robinson slides in right next to him. Think about what opposing offensive coordinators are staring at now. You’ve got Vea on one side, Robinson on the other, both eating up blockers and making life miserable for running backs. Stopping the run against Tampa Bay just got significantly harder. If you’re a running back on the Buccaneers’ 2026 schedule, you might want to start stretching now.
Robinson also brings a championship pedigree. He was part of the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive line during their Super Bowl LVI run in the 2021 season. He’s been in big games. He knows how to prepare, how to play through a long season, and how to perform when the lights are brightest.
Let’s not skip past the most uncomfortable part of all this. The Panthers don’t just have to watch Robinson thrive in Tampa Bay; they have to face him twice a year. Every time Carolina lines up against the Buccaneers, Robinson is going to be looking across the field at the team that let him go.
Is he going to circle those games on the calendar? Probably. Players almost always do in situations like this. Whether it translates into dominant performances remains to be seen, but motivation is a real thing in this league.
This is a savvy move by the Buccaneers. They addressed a real need without overpaying or reaching into the draft for an unproven commodity. Robinson is a proven, experienced defensive lineman who’s durable, productive, and, for $10 million on a one-year deal, a reasonable investment.
For the Panthers, it’s a tough pill to swallow. They saved cap space, sure. But when Robinson is recording sacks in a Buccaneers uniform this fall, that cap savings is going to feel a lot less satisfying.
