The Denver Broncos were playing abysmal football through the first three quarters, and the offense looked lifeless throughout the first three quarters. The Broncos’ whole team came alive in the fourth quarter, completing an unbelievable comeback against the New York Giants. With their win today, Denver now sits in first place in their division, overtaking the Los Angeles Chargers.
Bo Nix and the Broncos score 33 points in the fourth quarter, stunningly blanking the New York Giants. Denver got on the board with an unbelievable catch from Troy Franklin in the back of the end zone on a tipped ball from a Giants defender. The Giants would follow with some insane luck of their own, as Theo Johnson would catch a tipped ball and take it all the way in for a 41-yard touchdown. Denver would then go on to score fifteen unanswered points, with a touchdown run from Nix and a short pass to rookie Running Back RJ Harvey.
With the Giants seemingly on cruise control for most of the game, the Broncos put all of the pressure on them. Up 26-23, the Giants weren’t able to get anything going on their next drive, punting the ball away. Denver was able to score yet again, driving 68 yards down the field in just 59 seconds. An 18-yard designed run for Nix gave them a 30-26 lead.
With just under two minutes left to go in the game, the Giants had the ball on their own 35-yard line. Jaxson Dart completed a 19-yard pass to Wan’Dale Robinson on fourth down and gained an additional 15 yards on a roughing the passer call on John Franklin-Meyers. Moving up to the Denver 40-yard line, Dart heaved a pass to the end zone, drawing a holding call on Riley Moss. The Giants capitalized on this opportunity, scoring a touchdown on a designed run from Dart. Unfortunately, the Giants’ kicking game continues to hurt them, as they missed the extra point and were only up by 2.
Nix had 37 seconds to drive his team down the field and pull off an incredible win. On the first play of the drive, Nix delivered a strike to Marvin Mims, putting them in Giants territory. To cap it all off, Nix was able to connect with Courtland Sutton for a gain of 22, setting Will Lutz up for the game-winning field goal.
The Broncos have had a ton of great comebacks in the last few years, especially under Head Coach Sean Payton. With today’s win, the Broncos have now put themselves in the history books. Their 33 fourth-quarter points were the most in the fourth quarter by any team that had been shut out in the first three quarters in NFL history. Many fans didn’t think it could get any better than their late fourth-quarter comeback against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5. What Denver did today was truly remarkable and will give them an incredible amount of momentum moving forward.
Nix showed up when the lights were brightest today, throwing for over 200 yards in the fourth quarter and four total touchdowns. Payton also deserves credit for finally trusting his quarterback and expanding the playbook late in the game. Denver now sits at 5-2 on the season and is in sole possession of first place in the AFC West, with the Chargers losing 38-24 to the Indianapolis Colts. The Broncos will look to keep their four-game winning streak alive next week at home against the Dallas Cowboys.
