Denver Broncos continue to crush it in free agency by signing the best player available at a huge position of need

The Denver Broncos have signed free agent tight end Evan Engram to a two-year, $23 million contract with 16.5 million guaranteed at signing.

Tight end was arguably the Broncos' biggest need entering the offseason, and they got the best available. Originally a first-round draft pick by the New York Giants in 2017, Engram is an eight-year NFL veteran. He was a bit of a late boomer as he battled through injuries during his time in New York, but the talent was obvious.

Engram found his groove when he joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, setting career highs in receptions (73) and receiving yards (766). He then topped both of those numbers in 2023 with 114 receptions for 963 yards, earning a Pro Bowl nod. Engram is a two-time Pro Bowler overall and was selected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Unfortunately, he had an injury riddled season in 2024, missing Weeks 2-5 with a hamstring injury and Weeks 15-18 with a torn labrum. He was productive when healthy, though, catching 47 passes for 365 yards and one touchdown in nine games played. Denver brought Engram in for a visit on Monday, and then he proceeded to visit the rival Los Angeles Chargers.

It's unknown if the Chargers ever made an offer to Engram or what the terms of it were if they did, but clearly the Broncos were going to be denied. Quarterback Bo Nix now has a safety blanket in the short-to-intermediate passing game who is a good route runner and has great hands. Coach Sean Payton has a history of utilizing TEs, or as he call them, "jokers," effectively. Acquiring Engram should also open things up even more for Denver's top wide receiver Courtland Sutton.
