Denver Broncos could use late-round gem in 2023 NFL Draft

With no picks until the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos must find high-impact players in the lower rounds.

Denver has a major need at running back with Javonte Williams, a 2021 draft pick, recovering from an ACL tear, and Latavius Murray going un-signed by the Broncos in free agency.

Denver fans would love to see history repeat itself.

In 1995, Denver selected Terrell Davis in the sixth round, proving to be one of the franchise's best moves. He helped carry the Broncos to two Super Bowl titles (XXXII and XXXIII), became Denver's all-time rushing leader and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

Luckily for the Broncos, the 2023 draft class is deep at running back. Options for Denver on days two and three of the draft could include Tulane's Tyjae Spears and Syracuse's Sean Tucker.

The Athletic's Nick Kosmider predicted Denver to take Spears in the fifth round. In 14 games, Spears rushed for 1,581 yards, fifth in the FBS, and 19 TDs, tied for third in the FBS. He burned USC in the Cotton Bowl, running for four TDs and 205 yards in a 46-45 upset.

Tucker, a projected day two pick by Pro Football Focus, rushed for 3,182 yards on 589 carries in three seasons. His 2021 rushing total (1,496) ranked sixth in the FBS. Tucker has breakaway speed, nearly running a 4.3 40-yard dash, per PFF's Michael Renner.

Either would bolster Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson's supporting cast. Denver's offense ranked 21st in rushing yards, Wilson's third-worst unit in 12 seasons. Coincidentally, the QB hit career lows in passing TDs (16) and passer rating (84.4) in 2022.
