It was a tale of two entirely different games for both the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys compared to last week for each team. The Broncos thrashed the Cowboys 44-24 in the blowout victory on Sunday. After Denver engineered a historic comeback to edge out the New York Giants last week, the Broncos rode to a comfortable victory this time around. Meanwhile, the Cowboys found themselves on the other side of a blowout game after they dismantled a depleted Commanders team last week.
Coming into the game, it was a matchup between the top-ranked defense and offense in the Broncos and the Cowboys. Shortly after the game started, the Broncos made clear that the high-flying Cowboys offense would be in for a long day. Denver was able to hold Cowboys quarterback and MVP candidate Dak Prescott to just 188 yards passing, which tied Prescott for his lowest passing yards total this season.
The Broncos also ground the Cowboys’ potent ground game to a halt, as Cowboys Running Back Javonte Williams was held to just 41 yards rushing on the day. All of this comes despite the Broncos’ defensive anchor, Patrick Surtain II, missing the second half of the game. The 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year suffered both a shoulder and shin injury early in the first half but continued playing through the injuries before being benched at halftime.
Dallas has looked like an offensive juggernaut at AT&T Stadium. They average a whopping 40 points at home on the season. The road has told a completely different story for the Cowboys. For comparison, the Cowboys are averaging only 23 points on the road this season, a whopping 17-point difference between their road and home splits. The 24 points were the second-lowest total the Cowboys have scored on the road this season, with the loss also giving Dallas an eyebrow-raising record of 1-4 on the road. The only road win for the Cowboys came against the 1-7 New York Jets back in Week 5.
It had been a struggle for the Broncos’ offense in the first three quarters of their games this season, as Denver boasted a point differential of -9 in the first three quarters. That is last among teams with winning records this season. However, the Broncos offense was able to find its footing early thanks to the rushing attack by Running Backs J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey.
The backs combined for 157 of Denver’s 179 rushing yards, with Harvey collecting the first three touchdowns of his NFL career in a breakout game for the Broncos’ rookie. Star Quarterback Bo Nix also had an efficient game in Denver’s victory. He threw for 247 yards and 4 touchdowns while connecting on several deep balls to his receivers throughout the game.
As the Broncos moved to a 6-2 record on the season, they continue to solidify their position in the AFC West heading into the second half of the season. They are also in a prime position to snag the AFC’s top seed should the Indianapolis Colts slip up. As for the Cowboys, they start off the tougher second half of their schedule with a tough result on Sunday, although there is a silver lining for Dallas moving forward. Five of the last nine games for the Cowboys will be at home. That could help keep them firmly in position to acquire a wild card spot if all things go well.
