The Denver Broncos made a big move in NFL free agency to sign former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. It was a move that the team thought would help solidify its defense, but bad news came up on Sunday.
According to a report from Jennifer Lee Chan of 49ers on NBC, Greenlaw has suffered a serious quad injury that could force him to miss time during the upcoming 2025 season.
"Greenlaw suffered a torn quadriceps while working out, sources said. The injury could force him to miss a substantial portion of the upcoming 2025 NFL season," she wrote.
Losing Greenlaw is a tough blow for the Broncos before the season even arrives.
Greenlaw has been dealing with injury issues over the last few years. He simply hasn't been able to catch a break in recent years.
A couple years back in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs, Greenlaw suffered a torn Achilles simply running onto the field for a defensive possession. He missed most of last season due to that injury before suffering a calf injury.
Now, he has suffered the quad injury that could force him to miss even more time.
Back in the 2023 NFL season with the 49ers, Greenlaw was a star. He played in 15 games during that campaign, racking up 120 total tackles to go along with 1.5 sacks and four defended passes.
More updates are sure to come with some kind of timeline for the injury, but Denver will likely at least start the season without its new star linebacker.
