Derrick Henry’s imposing frame, longevity and consistency have set him apart from every other running back of this generation.
It’s hard for an NFL running back to play at an elite level for more than five years these days. The likes of Ezekiel Elliott, Todd Gurley, Devonta Freeman and Le’Veon Bell all went from superstar to out of the league by the time they were in their 30s.
The good news for today’s running backs? Derrick Henry has provided a nice blueprint to enjoying long-term success like he has.
In a 2024 feature for The Athletic, Dan Pompei reported that Henry spends around $240,000 annually on his body maintenance. That includes a personal chef who makes each of King Henry’s meals.
Pompei noted that Henry doesn’t eat any gluten, dairy, fried food or artificial sugars. When it’s football season, the future Hall of Famer waits until 4 or 5 p.m. EST to have his first meal of the day.
“I probably eat three chicken breasts, some rice and broccoli,” Derrick Henry told Pompei at the time. “Then I have some gluten-free pancakes, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes, home fries and some steak.”
Look at how Henry trains during the offseason, too:

His diet is even crazier…
• No fried food
• No dairy
• No gluten
• No artificial sugars
• Doesn't eat until 4/5 PM during the season

That’s how you stay elite as a running back in your 30s, folks.
The 32-year-old Henry did his part for the Ravens last season. He rushed for 1,595 yards and 16 touchdowns, even averaging a ridiculous 5.2 yards per carry (the third-highest mark of his career).
But the Ravens limped to an 8-9 finish, losing their win-or-go-home Week 18 game to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Legendary head coach John Harbaugh was fired and replaced by Jesse Minter, previously the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers.
At 32, time is running out on Henry to add a Super Bowl ring to his otherwise illustrious career. We’ll see if the coaching change pays off.
