It’s shaping up to be a long and uncomfortable offseason for C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans. Houston’s season came to a sudden halt last week when the Texans were eliminated from the playoffs in a loss to the New England Patriots, a game in which Stroud threw four interceptions.
In the aftermath, the second-year quarterback acknowledged that he struggled when the team shifted its offensive philosophy late in the season, asking him to do less rather than leaning into his playmaking ability. While analysts debated scheme changes and execution, an unexpected voice added fuel to a more unconventional narrative.

At UFC 324 media day in Las Vegas. UFC heavyweight knockout king Derrick Lewis was asked what moves he’d like to see the Texans make next season. Instead of breaking down roster needs or coaching adjustments, “The Black Beast” leaned into a theory that has floated around social media for years.
“I guess we gotta see what’s going on with C.J.,” Lewis said. “I think ever since we seen them show up with Amber Rose a couple games a few years ago and Kim Kardashian and all that, I’m like, man, it might be like a curse for them.”
Lewis’ comments instantly reignited chatter across Reddit and X, where fans have long joked half seriously, half sarcastically about a so-called “curse” tied to Stroud’s high-profile associations.
Though born in New Orleans. Lewis was raised in Houston and has always spoken proudly about his connection to the city. That personal attachment explains why he’s never shied away from critiquing the Texans when expectations aren’t met.
Over the past few seasons, Houston has struggled to escape inconsistency. Last year’s team showed promise after a slow start but ultimately fell in the AFC Divisional Round a loss that once again sent fans searching for explanations, rational or otherwise.
For some, the “curse” narrative became a tongue-in-cheek way to cope.
The speculation surrounding Stroud didn’t materialize overnight. It dates back to 2023, when reports linked the young quarterback romantically to Kim Kardashian. Both sides later shut down the rumors, clarifying that Kardashian had attended a charity event tied to criminal justice reform and that there was no romantic relationship.
Similarly, appearances involving Amber Rose at Texans games were enough for internet sleuths to craft a narrative that’s lingered far longer than the facts ever justified. Still, in the echo chamber of sports fandom, perception often sticks.
Stroud’s playoff performance will be dissected in film rooms, not on celebrity gossip blogs. Offensive philosophy, protection breakdowns, and decision-making under pressure are far more likely culprits than any so-called curse. But in a city desperate for sustained football success, even offhand comments from a UFC star can strike a nerve.
For now, the Texans head into the offseason searching for answers and hoping that 2026 brings fewer interceptions, fewer excuses, and maybe, just maybe, an end to one of the NFL’s strangest running jokes.
