Bill Belichick is playing chess while the rest of the NFL is playing checkers.
The New England Patriots signed Pro Bowl running back Lamar Miller on Thursday, and now we know the contract details thanks to ESPN's Field Yates.
Terms on the one-year deals signed by Jordan Reed and Lamar Miller, who are each returning after missing 2019 due to injury:
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 14, 2020
Reed: $1.05M base salary plus up to $750K in playing-time incentives
Miller: $1.05M base salary ($200K guaranteed) with $1.5M in achievable incentives.
Miller can make up to $2.55 million this coming season on his deal with the Patriots.
That's definitely a steep discount for the 29-year-old Pro Bowler who saw his four-year, $26 million contract with the Houston Texans expire in the spring.
Although Miller missed the entire 2019 campaign with a torn ACL, he made the Pro Bowl in 2018 and has recorded two 1,000-plus rushing yard seasons.
Miller has the same base salary as new quarterback Cam Newton, though the former Carolina Panthers signal caller can make up to $7.5 million in 2020 through incentives.
Starting running back Sony Michel still is recovering from ankle surgery, so it's not surprise the Patriots went out and grabbed Miller while they could.
