For the first time in more than a decade, the Detroit Lions will be taking their talents to the international stage.
On Tuesday, the team announced that it would be traveling from the Motor City to Munich this fall to player a 2026 regular season game in Germany.
The game will be held at the FC Bayern Munich Stadium and marks the first time in the franchise's history that it will play a game on German soil.
The Lions' last international game was Nov. 1, 2015, against the Kansas City Chiefs as the away team at London's Wembley Stadium — their second game at the famed English venue after beating the Atlanta Falcons as the home team the year prior.
And while details remain scarce as to who their opponent will be, the game date and the kickoff time, those will all be revealed during the NFL's schedule release this spring.
"We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season," Lions president and CEO Rod Wood said in a statement released by the team. "As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans."

Among those who were the most excited to learn of Detroit's upcoming International Series game was Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown — whose mother, Miriam Steyer, was born in Germany.
“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” Amon-Ra said (via PFT). “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”
The Lions are coming off a disappointing 9-8 season that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2022. Early projections have the team's over/under set at 10.5 wins, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, and they are the favorites to win the NFC North (+165).
