Look, it's not lost on me what kind of comments this story will get. There will be plenty of "but they won a Super Bowl" type stuff, and that's fine. For the Eagles fans who found their way here, this isn't a "Lions are better than the Eagles" article. You're looking for a random Facebook post to argue on.
In this line of work, I hear from a lot of Lions fans. I get comments from Twitter, Bluesky, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Some are the usual "S.O.L." after a loss or "Go Lions" after a win. Then, in third place, there's always something to the effect of...
If we're being totally honest, I do think Holmes sits on his hands just a little bit too much. I do believe the Lions could benefit from a swing that works for them financially. Is that out there, though? I don't know. Probably not.
With that said, Holmes making moves like Roseman will never be a thing, and you probably don't want that to be a thing. Everyone always celebrates Roseman's moves, but it's never considered that maybe the reason he makes so many of them is because he's covering up for all the mistakes he made in the first place.
The Eagles' defense is pretty bad right now. If Roseman is such a genius GM, why isn't the defense just already good? And are the moves he's making really that great? When the Eagles signed Za'Darius Smith, I had Lions fans in the comments talking about how not bringing him back was one of the biggest mistakes of Holmes' tenure. Smith retired three weeks later.
Trading for Jaelan Phillips is a solid move if it works out. It's something I felt the Lions should've done. But sending away a third-rounder was a bit much for a player who missed the last two seasons with injuries. They probably could have squeaked him out of here for a fourth-rounder.
The Lions could use some help in a few areas, but the fact is they're a really good team that had a bad loss on Sunday. Nobody expected this team to win 15 games again. It's tough to do that. But that doesn't mean the Lions should just sell out their ideals just to maybe have more success. They're already having success. They need a few particulars fixed, and they're good to go.
You don't want them constantly chasing their problems because that is a chase that will never end in this league. Something new will always come up. This is a game where guys get hurt every week and things happen. If you're constantly trying to right those wrongs, you will find yourself in a dangerous position where you've given up all your future assets, and you're in cap hell.
Why would you want to do that?
