Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff Receives Huge Extension Update From Insider

As the Detroit Lions look ahead to the 2024 NFL season, they are expecting to be a serious contender in the NFC once again. Under the leadership of Jared Goff, the Lions ended up making a run all the way to the NFC Championship Game in 2023. They came up short against the San Francisco 49ers, but the sky is the limit for their future moving forward.

Goff put together a big-time season for the Lions in 2023. He completed 67.3 percent of his pass attempts for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

One of the biggest questions of the offseason for the Lions has been whether or not they’ll get a contract extension done with their franchise quarterback. There have been some positive reports about the two sides working something out.

Now, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler has revealed a huge extension update on Goff. He has gone so far as to predict that Goff will be the next quarterback that gets a big deal done.

Here is what he had to say about the negotiations between Goff and the Detroit Lions:

“The Lions are on record that Jared Goff, signing him to an extension, is a ‘high priority’ so they are working on this. The feeling around the league from the people I’ve talked to is that Goff will be the next quarterback to score that megadeal. You’ve got Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, some others like maybe Dak Prescott down the road but Goff and the Lions seem to be the closest. Nothing imminent right now but they insist this is something they’ve been talking about, and the Lions are committed to keeping their core together.”

The Detroit Lions Remain Busy With Contract Moves This Offseason

Following the above report from. Jeremy Fowler, it’s clear that the Lions are still busy on the contract front. They have already made a couple of massive moves this offseason.

Previously, the Lions signed both star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and star offensive lineman Penei Sewell to lucrative contract extensions. If they can get a deal done with Goff, they would have locked up their three key offensive players who were needing new contracts.

Recently, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes opened up very honestly about Goff. He made it clear that the quarterback has earned his future extension with the franchise. After a quote like that, it seems very unlikely that the two sides will hit a major snag that knocks extension talks off the tracks.

At 29 years of age, Goff is looking at what could be his last chance to score a mega-extension. He clearly wants to get a new deal done with the Detroit Lions, but he’s not going to take a major discount to make it happen. Detroit will need to pay up in order to keep him around long-term.

It will be interesting to see what the final numbers look like once the contract gets worked out. The numbers have been rising rapidly on quarterback contracts and Goff is going to get paid handsomely. Hopefully, the two sides will be able to hammer out the final details sooner rather than later.
