Detroit Lions Star Seriously Asks Fans To Cover Their Faces Again Before Seattle Seahawks Game
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

A Detroit Lions star player asked fans to do something that has been commonplace at home games in the Motor City for decades–wear a facial covering at the Lions’ Week 2 contest against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Lions, preseason favorites to win the NFC North, head into the game hot after knocking off the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1. Lions fans should be proud of their team in Week 2. However, C.J. Gardner-Johnson wants the team to wear something eerily reminiscent of their losing days.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson wants Detroit Lions fans to wear a ski mask

Gardner-Johnson donned a blue ski mask during the Lions’ win over the Chiefs last Thursday night. Johnson told the Detroit Press he wants to see Lions fans wear them during the Seahawks game to symbolize the culture change in Detroit.

“You’re gonna see on Sunday. Blue ski masks everywhere. We villians, right? It’s part of us. It’s the culture. I’m changing it. We taking what’s ours.”

What’s ironic about Gardner-Johnson’s request is that fans covering their faces wouldn’t seem like a culture shock at all in Detroit. When I think of perennial Midwestern-loser-NFL-franchise fanbases, I envision Lions and Cleveland Browns fans with paper bags over their faces.

Gardner-Johnson wants to change that narrative. Even winning Lions fans shouldn’t have to show their faces, either.
