Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions placed rookie running back Mohamed Ibrahim on the Practice Squad/Injured Reserve. Ibrahim suffered a hip injury on a kick return in the third quarter against the Baltimore Ravens. He dislocated his hip, requiring emergency surgery after the game.

The Lions already have a banged-up running-back tandem. Starting RB David Montgomery has missed two games this season. Montgomery left Week 2 against Seattle with a thigh injury. He missed Week 3 against Atlanta. Montgomery exited Week 6 against Tampa Bay with a thigh injury and missed Week 7 against Baltimore. He is questionable for Detroit’s matchup against Las Vegas on Monday.

Rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs also has been dealing with an injury. Jahmyr injured his hamstring and missed Week 5 against Carolina and Week 6 against Tampa Bay. He came back to play Baltimore and got the bulk of the snaps.

The Detroit Lions rookie played college football at Minnesota.

Mo Ibrahim committed to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2017 over Kentucky, Iowa, Temple, and Towson. Ibrahim redshirted in his freshman season.

He took over as the lead back in his redshirt freshman season, rushing for 1,160 yards on 202 carries and nine touchdowns in ten games. He was named the MVP of the Iron Quick Lane Bowl after running for 224 yards and two touchdowns vs. Georgia Tech.

Ibrahim dealt with an ankle injury in his sophomore season. He missed the Georgia Southern game, limited against Purdue, and missed the Illinois game. He finished the season with 604 yards on 114 carries and seven touchdowns.

Ibrahim was named to the All-Big Ten, the Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year, and third-team All-American by AP in his junior season. He had 1,076 yards on 201 carries and 15 touchdowns in seven games during COVID.

Ibrahim suffered a devastating injury in 2021.

Ibrahim suffered a ruptured Achilles in Minnesota’s home opener against Ohio State. He had 163 rushing yards on 30 carries and two touchdowns before he got injured in the 3rd quarter. Ibrahim missed the rest of the season and decided to return for his last year of eligibility.

Ibrahim fully recovered.

Ibrahim fully recovered from his ruptured Achilles.  He missed the matchup against Purdue with an ankle injury. He rushed for 1,665 yards on 320 carries and 20 touchdowns. Ibrahim declared for the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 2023 Draft.

Mo Ibrahim went undrafted in the 2023 draft. He went undrafted because many teams were concerned with his injury history. Detroit signed him as an undrafted free agent.

Ibrahim had a solid start to training camp. He suffered an injury in the first preseason game. Detroit waived/injured him on August 20, 2023, and placed him on injured reserve. They released him with an injury settlement on August 26.

Detroit signed him to the practice squad on October 17th. They elevated him from the practice squad against the Baltimore Ravens.

We are hoping Mohamed Ibrahim will quickly recover from his injury. He has proven that he can recover from a devastating injury in the past.
