De’Von Achane Injury: Dolphins Fear Serious Knee Injury

The Miami Dolphins’ 24-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday may have raised a bigger long-term concern than falling to 0-3.

Star running back De’Von Achane suffered a knee injury during Miami’s opening possession and could not return. After the game, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley offered an ominous assessment.

“To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment,” Hafley said when asked about the severity of Achane’s injury.

That comment will undoubtedly have Dolphins fans holding their breath as the team waits for additional testing and a definitive diagnosis.

Achane was injured early in the first quarter after an 11-yard gain. He walked off the field under his own power, although he appeared to favor his left leg. Achane initially went into the medical tent before eventually heading to the locker room for further evaluation.

Miami initially listed Achane as questionable to return with a knee injury before officially ruling him out in the second half.

Achane finished the afternoon with 17 rushing yards on three carries.

So far, the Dolphins have not announced the exact nature of the injury or how much time Achane could miss. Until additional testing is completed, any specific diagnosis or timetable would be speculation.

Still, Hafley’s comments following the game certainly raise the level of concern.

Losing Achane for any extended period would be a massive blow to a Dolphins offense already struggling to move the football consistently.

Achane entered Sunday as Miami’s clear No. 1 running back. Through the first two games, he had accounted for 110 of the Dolphins’ 176 rushing yards. He was coming off a career-best 2025 season in which he rushed for 1,350 yards while averaging an NFL-best 5.7 yards per carry. He also contributed 488 receiving yards and scored 12 total touchdowns.

The Dolphins made it clear during the offseason that Achane is part of their long-term plans, signing him to a four-year, $64 million contract extension that reportedly included $32 million guaranteed.

If Achane is forced to miss significant time, Miami’s running back depth will be tested immediately.

Ollie Gordon II took over the bulk of the work after Achane exited Sunday’s game. Jaylen Wright was inactive against Kansas City after dealing with a stinger and foot injury during the week, leaving Miami extremely thin at the position.

The Dolphins will now await further testing on Achane’s knee, with more information potentially coming Monday.

For a 0-3 team trying to develop its young roster and build toward the future, losing one of its best and most explosive players would be devastating.

Right now, there is no confirmed timetable for Achane’s return.

But Hafley saying the situation “does not sound very optimistic” makes Achane’s status one of the biggest stories surrounding the Dolphins as they turn their attention toward Week 4.
