De’Von Achane Makes First Public Comments since Dolphins Extension
While the Miami Dolphins and De’Von Achane came to terms on a long-term contract extension in early May, the running back saw his name get bounced around in trade rumors in the months prior to the agreement. Considering all of the star players the Dolphins have gotten rid of this offseason, for a while, it seemed from the outside looking in that Achane had good reason to be worried about his future in Miami.
But in Achane’s first public comments since signing his contract extension, he said the Dolphins’ new head honchos — general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley — made it clear from the get-go that they had no intentions of trading him.
“I mean, I wasn’t worried about that,” Achane added (h/t to Heavy’s Eduardo Razo for the transcription). “We all went and talked to both of them one-on-one when they first got here. They kind of laid out all the little stuff, like, ‘We’re not trading you.’ That was set from the get-go.”
The pact between Achane and the Dolphins spans four seasons, meaning the former is under contract with the team through the 2030 season. Achane is also now the third-highest-paid running back in all of football in terms of average annual value, trailing only Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey.
The 24-year-old is poised to head the Dolphins’ running back room for many years to come after he was one of the NFL’s true breakout stars in 2025. Across 16 starts as a third-year pro, he posted career-highs in total rushing yards (1,350) and first downs rushing (56) and ended up as the league leader among all qualified players in rushing yards per attempt (5.7).
It should be exciting to see if Achane can build off his stellar 2025 campaign and raise his game to even another level. He’s already staked his claim as one of the NFL’s elite backs at 24 years old, and an even better 2026 season would elevate him to bona fide superstar status. A 1,400-plus rushing yards season from Achane in Year 4 would put him firmly in the conversation for being the top running back in the game.
