At the start of the summer, a Week 1 regular season matchup between the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns would not have been circled by many on the 2022 NFL calendar outside of those two fanbases. Obviously, a lot has changed since former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was traded to the Panthers in July.
Last week, Cleveland's All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett gained some headlines when he said he would enjoy "a couple sacks" of his former teammate in Week 1, but in reality, which star defensive players wouldn't have said something similar? Later in the week, Mayfield's wife, Emily, thanked the city by saying "You'll forever hold a special place in my heart" among other compliments.
As far as the signal-caller himself, he is stayed mostly neutral, saying in mid-July for example, that he had "no animosity" toward the Browns and was excited for the "special" game. Now, as the two teams are less than two weeks away from their clash, Mayfield's thoughts may have slightly changed, according to an apparent conversation he recently had with NFL Network's Cynthia Frelund.

On Tuesday morning however, Frelund tweeted that fans may be overreacting to the exchange.
Oh boy, this is silly. Don’t make this more than it is. I was wishing him good luck, colorfully. He agreed with me, colorfully. What do you expect anyone to do in this situation… #browns
