Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys Trade for Joey Porter Jr.

The Dallas Cowboys continue to look to add talent to improve a porous defense from last season. The Cowboys traded for Joey Porter Jr. with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2027 6th-round pick and a 2028 2nd-round pick, per Yahoo Sports. The Cowboys and Steelers continue to make trades with one another in recent years, including George Pickens and Broderick Jones.

Joey Porter was selected in the 2023 NFL Draft and is in the final year of his rookie contract. Porter and the Steelers were not able to reach a contract extension during the offseason. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported, “Porter won’t get an imminent extension in Dallas. “Porter hasn’t asked for one yet either, the Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reported.

The Pittsburgh Steelers general manager, Omar Khan, reiterated on August 31st that the team will not negotiate contract extensions during the season. In return, Porter has not played a game this season, listed with a back injury that many believe Porter’s contract situation played a role in him not suiting up for the Steelers this season.

Porter possibly wanted to be paid as a top cornerback in the league; Christian Gonzalez signed a 4-year $135 million deal, and Devon Witherspoon a 4-year $132 million deal. Pittsburgh chose not to do so, dealing Porter to the Cowboys. During Porter’s 3-year stint in Pittsburgh, he tallied 165 combined tackles, 3 interceptions, and 31 passes defended.

Does this Fix the Dallas Cowboys’ Defense?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones continues to make moves to improve the defense. Jones hinted at a blockbuster move. Porter Jr. is an upgrade, and Jones might be eyeing another big move before the NFL trade deadline, which is November 10th at 4 pm. What triggered this trade for the Cowboys is an abysmal secondary that is struggling, giving up seven touchdowns with no interceptions.

Of 99 corners, per Pro Football Focus and Yahoo Sports, no Cowboys cornerback ranks in the top 50. Daron Bland is 55 th, Cobie Durant is 67th, and Shavon Revel is 85th. Durant is dealing with a hamstring injury. Porter can upgrade the secondary immediately when healthy for the Cowboys.
